Practice What You Preach!

I try to be very intentional with my kids. After all, we are to train up our children right? I find myself going the extra mile to make sure I catch those "teachable" moments from praying to forgiving to sharing. You know what I realized? I don't always practice what I preach! I don't do this on purpose, I think I get so caught up in teaching the kiddos hat sometimes I'm neglectful to myself. Can anyone relate?
Here is a great example of what I mean. When my almost 3 year old is overtired, she tends to have bad dreams that night and I brace myself for a night of waking up to comfort her. When she wakes up crying, I automatically think to pray with her for Jesus to soothe her. When she's hurt, I automatically pray with her for comfort. You get where I'm going right? I know Jesus is the one that can provide for us what we need in all circumstances, BUT I don't always do that for myself!
Why is it that when I'm experiencing something hard in life, I try to talk myself out of it or tell myself to get over it.  I don't always go to Jesus first when he is the one and only that will never fail is! There are common catch phrases that you hear often like "believe in yourself" and "you can do anything" or "dream big". While I do believe you can accomplish anything, we need to be careful not to lean on ourselves and our own understandings. We may think our ways are better but there is someone that knows everything! Someone that care so much for us and is waiting for us to come to Him.
While I'm teaching my children to solely rely on the Lord, it is a wonderful and constant reminder for me to do the same thing. I know from experience that God always exceeds my own capabilities and strengths by a long shot!

Reflection question: Am I going to Jesus first in prayer when I am facing issues or hard times in my life?

"Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight." Proverbs 3:5-6
