Why It's Important to Love Ourselves

We are all familiar with the second greatest commandment which is to "Love your neighbor as yourself", but what does it mean to love yourself? When I talk about loving yourself, I do not mean in the worldly and prideful way. We are not to love ourselves in a way that reflects self- worship. Loving yourself is more about being thankful for the person you are, after all you were created in the image of Christ. All people are valued and loved by the Lord, and as a believer in Christ your love for yourself (self- worth) is in anchored Christ.

When we do not love ourselves, it's easy to feel unworthy of God's love for us, and to avoid a personal relationship with Him. God wants us to see ourselves on the way that he see's us. He has created each one of us with a special plan for our lives, and has given us individual talents and gifts that we can use to glorify Him and to further the kingdom. Here are two  reminders and reasons why you should love yourself.

You Were Created by God
Psalms 139:16 says "Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be." God knew us way before we were born, and even loved us then, how amazing is that! Your designer loves you, and created you in his likeness. This is a great reason to love and respect ourselves. We were hand crafted by God. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do" (Ephesians 2:10). God has equipped you to work for Him, what an honor and self- esteem booster to work for the King!

God Loves You Unconditionally
God has unconditional love for you and has a purpose for your life. You will find meaning and purpose in Christ. He offers the free gift of salvation to anyone who accepts it, not because you deserve it, but because he loves you. The cool thing is God, the King of the entire universe is continuously working in you! Philippians 1:6 says "being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus."

It's easy to overlook and ignore the last part of the commandment which is to love yourself. It is important to God for us to love ourselves and be thankful for the person God created us to be. Remember that if you do not love yourself it is hard to love others. You cannot give something away that you do not have yourself.

  1. “You cannot give something away that you do not have yourself.” – this really hit home for me because it’s so true! How could I love my wife, my mother and father, my children if I do not love myself? I learned to love myself, with good and bad, and to accept my flaws and work with them and not use them as an excuse not to do good.

Whenever I feel something lacking in my life, you know what I do? I just give it away. Because as you said how could I give something away if I don’t have it. If I lack money that is the perfect time to give money to others less fortunate. And guess what happens? I realize how wealthy I am.
