The Significance of Easter

Whenever April is approaching, we begin to see cute cuddly bunnies, and brightly colored plastic eggs with candy all over the shelves in every store. Unless you are shopping at a Christian store, you usually see greeting cards with trees, blue skies and bunnies; but no cross or tomb. All of these items  are visual cues to us that Easter is fast approaching, but it is also a visual reminder that those fast selling products are blinding or sugar coating the depth of Easter.

The significance of Easter is easily overlooked and distorted. It is more of an American tradition and a celebration of spring. This is the time of year where everyone shows up to church in new outfits and hear a story about Jesus. Why is this story so significant and important? I am not a theologian, but I would like to share a few reasons why Easter is important and special to me as a believer in Christ.

Christian Faith
Jesus Resurrection is the basis for the Christian faith. Other religions were founded by both prophets and men who eventually ended up in the grave. Jesus transcends death, and we can take comfort in the fact that Jesus was born to a virgin as a human, died so that we may have eternal life (that is up to you to accept his gift) and resurrected on the third day.  The grave could not hold Him back, and he lives today.

Part of the significance in the Resurrection of Christ leans on who He is. He is the son of God, in human form who rose from the dead. Jesus, who claimed to be Son of God was put to death for it. A soldier standing near the cross even said "Truly this man was the Son of our God!" (Mark 15:39). The Resurrection was proof that Jesus was who he said he was.  This event also shows the power of God Himself. God created the universe and has power over everything. Only He who created life, can have power to resurrect after death. This reminds us of his sovereignty over both life and death. The Resurrection proves that physical death is not the end of human existence. God, the giver of life has triumph over the grave. Death is not the end for those who believe. The Resurrection is the ultimate victory, death has been defeated. There is nothing we did to earn or deserve this; Jesus whom was perfect and blameless, accepted and fulfilled this role (and prophecy) because he loves us. His death atones our sins.
"Knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile ways was of life inherited from your forefathers, but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ. For He was foreknown before the foundation of the world, but has appeared in these last times for the sake of you who through Him are believers in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God." 1 Peter 1:18-21

If Jesus Never Died for Us
The Apostle Paul explains to use in the book of Corinthians the importance of the Resurrection of Christ and reminds us of the consequences we would have if there was no death and Resurrection of Christ.  If Christ's Resurrection did not occur, there would be no hope.

  •  "Our preaching is useless and so is our faith" ( 1 Corinthians 15:14)
  •  " We apostles would be lying about God- for we have said that God raised Christ from the            grave" (1 Corinthians 15:15)
  •  " And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is useless and you are still guilty of your sins"        ( 1 Corinthians 15:17)
  • "All who have died believing in Christ are lost!" (1 Corinthians 15:18)
The Resurrection proves that physical death is not the end of human existence. God, the giver of life has triumph over the grave. Death is not the end for those who believe. The Resurrection is the ultimate victory, death has been defeated! That is something to celebrate every day. It is wonderful to spend time with family during the Easter holiday, but never lose sight of the significance of what Jesus has done for us!

* If you are questioning whether Jesus really existed and looking for historical and scientific evidence, a great book to read is The Case for Christ by Lee Strobel.
