Bible Verses: When You are Overwhelmed

Life at times, can be a tough. There are times when there are so many rotten lemons being thrown in your face that you cant even make lemonade! There are times when you will feel trapped and weighed down by life. It can be hard to admit these feelings, after all you do not want to seem ungrateful to God who provides you with everything, and blesses you even during times of stress and confusion. Even so, we all become overwhelmed at some point in our lives.

There are times when I have been mad at God. Mad about things I do not understand, and mad at what appears to be unanswered prayers. I have to remember that no prayer goes unanswered. Sometimes we have to wait, sometimes the answer is yes and sometimes it is no. For me, waiting is hard. I am naturally impatient and I waiting for over a year for a request to be answered and fulfilled. This can lead to the feeling of being overwhelmed, and can cause you to lose focus.

Is there anything wrong with asking God for something? No, there is nothing wrong with prayer requests to our heavenly father , but we have to remember that God is not a genie, and he doesn't owe us anything. If my request to Him is aligned with his will for my life, then it will be given to me in His time. In the meanwhile, I can look to scripture when I become overwhelmed. There are so many verses in the Bible that can comfort you and remind you that everything will be OK, and verses that encourage you to focus on Jesus, knowing that he has your best interest in mind.

“For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.” (Romans 8:24-25)
We are reminded and encouraged to remain hopeful with an eternal perspective. We will be reunited with Jesus, and that is something to be hopeful and encouraged by.

Then Jesus said, "Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest." (Matt. 11:28 )
Even though the Christian life is not easy, it is possible. Our Lord is gentle and will provide rest for our souls.

For I am the LORD your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you. (Isa. 41:13 )
God hold's the right hand of his people, teaching them to walk by faith; God is in control, lean on him even during times where we simply do not understand where he is taking us.

From the end of the earth I will cry to You, When my heart is overwhelmed; Lead me to the rock that is higher than I. (Psalm 61:2)
Wherever we are, we have the ability to call upon God. When we need comfort we can draw close to to God, the source of all comfort. Though the heart is overwhelmed, it can be lifted through prayer.

  1. I just started reading the Bible so I didn’t know any of these wonderful quotes. I particularly like the 3-rd one – every time I say it I feel goosebumps and feel God is helping me! I used this single quote the past few days when I felt like the walls were closing in around me and saying it out loud and with my eyes closed made a huge difference! I try to put all my feelings of despair out there when I say the words and they soon seem to go away and a serene peace overcomes me.
