White Cake Recipe: Ombre Cake Layers

Picture shows a 3 layer cake, directions are for 4 layer cake.

Ombre seems to be the new "it" thing! I even have ombre highlights in my hair and I do like this trend! I also love baking and decorating cakes, so I decided to try an ombre cake. I used blue for the batter and pink for the rosettes I piped on the outside of the cake.

I used a basic vanilla or white cake recipe and split the batter to make a 3 layer cake. See the recipe and steps below for ombre cake filling.

White Cake Ingredients

1 1/2 Cups of granulated sugar
2 cups of all purpose flour
2 tsp. of baking soda
1 1/2 sticks of butter
2 tsp. of vanilla extract
1 cup of milk (can be soy)
* you will need gel food coloring, color of your choice.

Directions:
Preheat oven to 350, and grease four 9 inch bans. You will need to double the recipe.

1. In a mixer, add dry ingredients and mix on low until all ingredients are thoroughly mixed together.
2. Add other ingredients slowly and one at a time. Continue to mix until all ingredients are mixed      together.
3. Split batter evenly into 3 separate bowls (4 cups of batter in each bowl)
4. In the first bowl, add food coloring with a toothpick to create a rich, dark color. In the second bowl, add a little less coloring. Each bowl of batter you want to make a shade or 2 lighter.
5. Transfer the batter into the greased pans and place in the oven 2 at a time for 20-25 minutes (or until toothpick comes out clean from center of cake).
6. Let the cakes cool, level the layers and stack with icing in between.

It is important to make sure the cake is completely cool before trying to level it. Trust me, I've crumbled cakes before! I would even suggest refrigerating the layers before attempting to cut them. You can decorate the cake if you want, or just cover it with plain or colored icing.
